HOLIDAY SHIRT

Today was my last day of holidays before I enter my final semester at the VCA.

I've found that there is less and less difference between holiday time and uni time. That's not to say that uni is a walk in the park and a picnic, it's more that I've found these holidays to be just as busy, and that I'm chosing to spend my time in a similar way to the time I have during the semester. I guess that just means that what I want to do and what I need to do are to an extent interlinked, and that a 'holiday' is more a frame of mind than anything else.
So from here on I'll be holidaying indefinitely, with a holiday shirt to match.

Cheers to that!

TAILS.

There's not much in Malmsbury. Even less when you've lost your one (and only) wallet (within 10 minutes of arriving), and your only phone is out of credit.
The shops are closed.
The motel owner's out of town.
The buildings are run down.
We're in the rain/hail.
Out of food/luck.
No hot water.
Just a heater (thank fuck).
Tails we stay, heads, we go.
The coin always knows.

CRITIQUE

Being critical used to be one of my strengths.
Arguably, it turned into a weakness.
Now it seems to be a constant exploration. A search for the meaning of 'quality'. A hang-up under examination instead of an active tool in self-rejection.

My work has turned from a desperate outward search for something to identify with, something to label as my own, to an inward looking process of analysis and self-reflection. I'm not a huge fan of work that is intensely personal to the point where it is completely self-indulgent, but I guess that's part of what art is, at the end of the day.

This was my set up for assessment, where I officially invite external criticism to my work around criticism. A set-up for rejection.

SUCCESS.

A couple of weeks ago I was in a show with the 8 other 3rd year drawing students in the student gallery of the VCA.

We decided to call the show SUCCESS.

The title worked nicely in context with my piece, which was based primarily on self-doubt and failure. (Yes, the title is a joke)

This was my piece in the show...

BOOKED

I turned some of my work into a book a little while back. Mainly because I had all these pages of different things (writing, drawings, photos, paintings) and I figured that none of them were particularly interesting on their own, but together they made a whole lot more sense. There was a collective relationship between all the elements that expressed far more than the individual parts. I liked that.

Also, nothing has to stick up for itself too much. Safety in numbers. That kind of thing.

2(B+W)

Fairly self-explanatory - some shots from my second roll of successful black and white film.
That's about all I guess.

IIIIII'll... post some images of the books I'm making with these shots and a range of other stuff later. As in after I've got my shit together.

(You could be waiting a while.)
